She loves to rough house. Mom just looks at us, shakes her head and says "Kids..." ha!

Here is a picture of Ruby and I wrestling. But I wouldnt trade her for the world - she is my best friend.

Thats why I am dedicating this post to her today. I want to let everyone know how wonderful it is to have a doggie sister to share your toys with, to snuggle on the blankie with and to run around the house like a nut with! She keeps me entertained when mom and dad are busy. And its also nice to have someone to get in trouble with.

Here is my sister Ruby looking oh so sweet:

We're back!

Wow, we are finally back! Mom had some computer problems and we weren't online for awhile. I just want to report that we are alive and well.

Ruby and I are doing good. We've been steadily chewing up the house, err, I mean our toys. We are constantly playing and getting along really very well.

I finally learned to like my crate and no longer freak out when I am left home in it. I think it helps that Ruby is in her crate right next to mine, so now I dont feel so alone.

Since I last posted, something scary happened to me. My mom took me to the vet and I had to stay over night. I was scared there. And then I came home and had stitches on my belly. My mom said it was something called a Spay. My tummy hurt for a few days but then Ruby had me up and running around like my normal self. I didnt touch the stitches at all... mom told me that I was a very good girl.

This was me after I got my "spay" - I was sleepy when I came home.

Mom is having problems with Ruby. She just wont housebreak. I learned right away, but Ruby is still going in the house. That makes mom upset because Ruby pees on the new hardwood floor. Ruby also pees in her sleep. Mom took her to the vet, but they didnt find anything wrong. We are all hoping that she grows out of it. Maybe the muscles that make her able to "hold it" havent fully developed yet.

We're Feeling Better !

Ruby and I are finally feeling better. I say "we" because just as Ruby was starting to get better, I got sick. Turns out Ruby had two things - Coccidia and Giardia. I caught them from her. Yuck! But I wasnt nearly as sick as she was. I just had watery poopies for three or four days. As soon as mom saw my poop getting icky, she called the vet and he gave me medicine right away. I dont really like taking pills, but I took these because I didn't want to get as sick as my little sister was.

Mom said please ignore the wood floor in this picture - mom and dad are getting hard wood floors put in - in the meantime its just this yucky plywood.

When we were both better, mom and dad decided to take us to the big park in Salisbury, as a treat! We walked on the trail and saw lots of geese, squirrels, ducks, people jogging and other dogs. It was very exciting. Then we went to a little area that was fenced in and mom let Ruby off her lease to run with me. I had to stay on my retractable leash because the gate entrances were open and wouldnt close - mom didnt want me to run out and into traffic. We had a lot of fun!

I cant wait for the fence to be finished in our backyard so Ruby and I can go outside and just run and run and run! Right now, we are always on our retractable leashes. I guess its cause mom is afraid that we will run in the road and get hurt.

Last time I went to NJ with mom and dad, they went over a friends house and I got to meet a Golden doggie who lived with those people. Well, the poor doggie died last week. She was two years old. Mom said that she got sick in her people's car and when her family pulled over to clean her up, she jumped out of the car and in front of a truck. Poor doggie. I was very sad because I liked her a lot. Dont let your doggies off leash any place where they can run in the road!

Other news: I have discovered a new love of ice cubes! I have been drinking a lot because its hot, but I drink too quick sometimes and throw up. Mom has started to give me some ice cubes to chew on before she lets me drink my water. Its been a little chaotic here at my humans house. My little sister, Ruby, has been very sick.
9 days after she came to live with us, she started having really icky poop with blood and slimy stuff in it. It was all watery and stuff. Gross. She wasnt eating very much and was throwing up.

My mom took her to the vet (scary!!) and they said she was dehydrated too. They gave her a shot and put lumps of water under her skin. Ruby looked like a camel. But really I was sad for her. My mom had to take home a bag of the water stuff from the vet and every few hours she had to put a needle in Ruby and give her more lumps of water under her skin.

After three visits to the vet in one week, they diagnosed Ruby with both Coccidia and Giardia. Mom was very worried that Ruby was going to go to doggie heaven because she was so sick. But, Ruby has been doing better the past few days now. Her poop is back to normal and she is eating and playing and being a happy puppy again!

I am happy too. Because now I have my playmate back. I love her very much. We go everywhere together. I take good care of her too. My mom said I would make a good mommie because I hold Ruby down and clean her face, ears & belly.

My mom is worried about me getting sick now too. So she is going to call the vet and see if she can get pills for me too... just in case. My poop is fine right now, but my mom doesnt want to take chances with me getting sick. I am healthy and happy.

Although there is one thing I am sad about. My doggie parents, Grace and Maxwell had a reunion party last month. I wanted to go to see my littermates and my older siblings but because mom had to stay home to take care of Ruby (she was getting the water lumps all weekend) we couldnt go. Coopers mom sent us a group picture though - and everyone is beautiful, just like me. I hope they do this again sometime because I would love to see everyone.

My little sister, Ruby

Well yesterday mom and dad were gone alllll day. But then again, I am 6 months old now. My new sister is a Vizsla & was born 4.23.06 in Virginia.
So far I really like her, we have been playing a lot. She licks my nose and bites my face. I try to play nice but I do get a little carried away. I forget that she is so small and I am so much bigger than her ... so I knocked her down a few times and made her cry once. But I am sure as the days go by I will learn my own strength and be gentle with the little monster, errr, I mean, my little adorable sister.
This is us playing last night when she first arrived:

As for an update about me, the shining star of this blog - I am doing well. I have grown a lot!! My mom and dad are going to take me to get fixed (I didnt know I was broken?) soon at the vets. They said they are waiting until after the Puppy Party that my doggie parents are having later this month. They said they wanted to make sure that I would be all well and not have to worry about stitches or anything since there will be like 11 other weimies (my brothers and sisters and parents) will be at the party. I am really looking forward to seeing Bella and Gunner and Ryder and Cooper and Grace my mom and Maxwell my dad and every one else!
*wags tail* Its a happy life for me!

The Sand, The Surf... it's The Ocean!

Mom and Dad finally took me to the ocean today. It was a busy day on Assateague Beach but we found a little spot for me to run around on. There were a lot of doggies there with their humans. I was freaking out... running and jumping all over the place. Mom complained that I didnt stand still long enough for her to take pictures but I think she got a few.

I tasted the water, it was icky. I also tried to eat some sand, ewww. I gaged it back out of my mouth as fast as I could. My mom laughed as I hung my tongue out. Well you know, I am still young so the first time I encounter something new, I have to taste it. But take it from me... salt water and wet sand are not tasty so dont waste your time trying them when you go to the beach. I think I got sand stuck in my teeth even.

My human parents didnt keep me there long because there was too much of a commotion going on with all the people there with kids and stuff but they promised to take me back again sometime soon. They said during the weeknight there may not be so many tourists there.

On the way to the beach there was a car behind us that didnt have any top on it and I could see the people in it. I was barking at them... grrrrr. I wanted to make sure they saw me. I may bark but I wag my stubby tail and butt so they know I am friendly.

This is a picture of me and my human Dad.

My mom took a few videos... she said they arent the best, but here they are - you can see me running all over like a crazy weimy pup!

Larry the Cable Guy adopts a Weim

I was just checking out all the cute weimys like me that are available for adoption through rescue organizations and I saw that Larry the Cable Guy adopted a weimaraner from http://www.heartlandweimrescue.org/. Have any of you ever seen the doggie fairy? I bet she is a Chihuahua with butterfly wings!

Last week I had my first bath. I cant say that I liked it very much. That shot hurt!!

I got the rest of my shots at the vet this past Friday. He said I am 32 lbs now.

I was upset cause the shot hurt, but mom told me its important to get your shots because if not, I could get sick.

Here is a list of some icky things that you can get if you dont get those pointy needles in your butt.

There are a variety of preventative shots and medications available and your pup may or may not need them depending on where you live and how much exposure your dog will have to such things as other dogs, parks, wooded areas, etc. or areas heavily infested with mosquitoes, fleas or ticks. Here are some of the more common reasons for your pups shots and medications.
DISTEMPER - This is a common viral disease, highly contagious and spread by secretions from infected animals. It is easily destroyed by disinfectants. Symptoms are: fever, watery nasal discharge, yellow eye drainage, and loss of appetite. If ignored, distemper can affect the respiratory, GI and central nervous system with twitching, unsteadiness, weakness, paralysis and seizures. It can be fatal, or result in serious chronic physical problems.

HEARTWORM - Contracted from the bite of an infected mosquito, it grows into a long, threadlike worm that makes it home in your dog's heart. Symptoms are: coughing, decreased exercise tolerance, and weight loss. Advanced stages will have a swollen abdomen, fever and difficulty breathing. It is difficult to treat, but left untreated, it is fatal.

KENNEL COUGH - Caused by several different bacteria and viruses, such as canine parainfluenza, canine adenovirus-2 and bordatella bronchoseptica. Severity of symptoms varies with age and condition of dog. To puppies, older or debilitated dogs, it can be fatal. Symptoms are: spasms of dry, harsh coughing, usually followed by gagging or retching, fever, nasal discharge and depression.

LEPTOSPIROSIS - Transmitted through the urine of infected animals, it has been on the rise in the past few years. It is contagious to humans. Symptoms are: vomiting, depression, kidney pain with frequent urination, ulcers of the mouth/tongue, and a thick brown coating of the tongue. Both bloody vomiting and stools may occur.

LYMES DISEASE - Transmitted by ticks during their feeding. Symptoms are: a rash that is "target" like in appearance, fever, lameness caused by joint stiffness/swelling, and paralysis. Treatment is difficult and can extend over a long period of time.

CANINE HEPATITIS - Not the same as the human form, this disease primarily affects the liver, kidneys and the lining of the blood vessels. Symptoms are various as this virus can be anywhere from mild to fatal and can strike suddenly with rapid advancement. High fevers, bloody diarrhea, refusal of food, painful movement, jaundice, bleeding gums and sensitivity to light require immediate vet intervention.

RABIES - Transmitted via infected saliva and affects the brain. Symptoms are personality changes, staring off into space, sensitivity to light, fever, vomiting and diarrhea. As the virus progresses, the dog will either become agitated and aggressive, or paralytic - the mouth drops open with the tongue hanging out, drooling, coughing and pawing at the mouth. Once symptoms develop, it is fatal. Definite diagnosis can be made by autopsy only.

PARVOVIRUS - Highly contagious between dogs, it is transmitted by contaminated droplets and stool. It can easily be transported from kennel to kennel on shoes, crates or other inanimate objects. Affecting the GI tract, bone marrow, lymph nodes and heart, the symptoms are: abdominal pain, fever, bloody diarrhea, depression with loss of appetite and difficulty breathing. It is highly fatal to puppies. This virus is resistant to most disinfectants.

CORONAVIRUS - Coronavirus is transmitted by contact with infected saliva and/or stool. The stool is usually noted to be yellow-orange in color, foul smelling, watery, and often bloody. Dehydration, weight loss and death can occur. It can reoccur 3-4 weeks after the initial symptoms subside.

GIARDA - Caused by contaminated food or water from an infected animals stool, most often a wild animal or cross contamination at a dog park or other place where many dogs gather. It is usually asymptomatic in adult dogs, but will cause diarrhea, possibly mixed with blood and mucous in puppies. Diagnosis can be difficult, but once found, is easily treated. The source of the giardia contamination must be removed.

COCCIDIA - Very common in the canine population, it is estimated that 80% of all domesticated dogs are infected with coccidia. Again, like giardia, it is asymptomatic in adult dogs, but the spores are shed in stool, recontaminating the ground for youngsters to pick up once they tred through contaminated areas. It is also easily treated, but often recurs due to the spores shed and ground contamination. Luckily, treatment is cheap, however must be given for 21 days. Immaculate yard pick-up of feces is a must during this time. There is no way known to completely decontaminated the yard/play area, although it is surmised that a good winter freeze will do the trick. This writer suspects that it is just the pup coming into adulthood that ceases the symptoms, rather than a winter freeze.

Growing Pains

My human cousins (3 girls) are coming to stay with us for a week. They arrive today! I am very excited to have some play mates. My mom said that kids are a lot like us puppies: unruly, have selective hearing and are full of energy.

Here are some stages we go through:
Birth to 3 months
They alternate between spurts of high activity and deep sleep. They are totally dependent on their parents/owners and can be very clingy and fearful around strangers. Food is a strong desire but only certain food is appropriate for them and problems can occur if anything "strange" is ingested. Owners spend a lot of time monitoring body functions!

3-6 months

They begin exploring their universe and they get into everything. The word they hear most often is - NO! Their bodies don't always seem to follow their instructions: "How did my head get between these railings? I'm pretty sure I can fit under this couch. Boy, those stairs are hard to climb up and down!" They seem to be trying to communicate and sometimes they even understand what you want. "Sit? Did you say sit? Oh, you mean, sit. Did you mean now?" Their adult teeth begin to emerge - everything ends up in their mouths!

6-9 months

They start to make their way in the larger world - dog classes, visits to exciting places, new situations. They begin to develop their unique personalities as they are exposed to different things. It's all the owner can do to keep their attention and not have them go running off to play with Spot & Rex. They go through some sudden growth spurts which often leave them physically confused. "I used to be able to get through this hole. These stairs aren't that bad." Their diet changes from "kid stuff" to more grown-up fare and if they haven't yet discovered people food, this is the time they will root it out - out of your hand, out of the garbage and off the counter.

9-12 months

The dreaded "H" word: hormones! Suddenly the boys are lifting their legs and the girls are flirting or snapping. What happened to that mild-mannered puppy of yesterday? One moment they're strutting, bossy, sassy, fearful, ignoring you! Then they are all sweetness and light, shy and bashful, wrapping themselves around your legs. All these physical changes are confusing. Please let this be a phase - tell me that my pup will settle down again!

1 year +

We're in the home stretch now. There are still a few kinks to work out and an inevitable crisis every once in a while, but now begins the test to see just how solid a foundation we were able to build during those early years. All those days of love mixed with discipline, compassion mixed with common sense and striving to understand, will begin to pay off. Now we step back, take a look and say "I helped create this wonderful being with whom I will be happy to share my life."
...I am in phase 3-6 months now. I also think that is the case with most pets. I watch my mom as she looks through Petfinder.org and I see lots of cats and dogs that need homes. It makes me happy to know that they are doing well. I would like to start an online photo album where I can keep and show pictures of my birth family and my adopted family. If any of my doggie blog friends have a suggestion as to a good photo album site, please let me know. Thanks!

My Mom sent in my AKC registration papers and got this nifty Certificate of Pedigree which shows who my ancestors are. They are the building blocks, the foundation... of your family. Love your Mom and Dad, love your sisters and brothers - because chew toys, neighborhood dogs and kitties, they all come and go... but your family is forever.

Photo Time!!

My sister Bella sent me some pictures of herself - some nice new ones so I can see how she is doing. I bet she is a lot bigger now!

*...Scales, Crates and Veterinarians...*

My mom weighed me this morning and I am 17.5 lbs now. I dont really know if that is average for a Weimy like me or not. But my mom said I look healthy and eat well so I should grow up to be a big strong girlie.

I am at work again with her today. She said that she brought me to work with her today because I am going to the veterinarian tonight. I dont know what that is, but I sure hope its fun!
Mom said it would be a little stressful since it's my first time there without my littermates. I am a good girl though, so I think it will go well.

I am having a problem at home though. I dont like my crate when the door is closed. I cry a lot whenever I am in my crate, even for a few minutes. If the door is open its ok, I go to sleep or play with my toys but as soon as the door closes, I freak out. Yesterday mom had to run out and left me in the crate for about 30 minutes. When she came home, I was so stressed that I had foam saliva on my chin, chest and front feet. Even though mom will leave my toys, my blankie and a crunchie doggie biscuit in there for me... I just dont like it. Anyone have any suggestions to make me feel more comfortable in there?

*woofers*

My Big Trip Up North !

This past weekend I went to northern NJ with my mom and dad.
It was a very long drive up in the truck. I dont particularly like riding in vehicles yet. My mom says I will when I get older. But right now, they kinda scare me. I tried to sleep for most of the way up there. I sprawled out on the front seat between mom and dad for most of the trip up. But then I moved to the back seat because my blankie was back there. It took about 4 hours to get to my Great Auntie Dee's house. She lives in the "mountains" of NJ.

When I first arrived I met Great Auntie Dee, Great Uncle Steve and my little Aunties: Samantha, Jessica and Alyssa. They all loved me. And I loved them too. They were a lot of fun. Its always interesting to have new humans to smell, chew on and play with. My Auntie Jessica took me outside a lot. She loves animals and wants to be a vet when she gets big.

This is a picture of me and my little Auntie Alyssa.

My cousin Liberty (who is very big! She is 1/2 Newfoundland) scared me at first. She is large and full of energy. I have to admit, looking up at such a large dog made me nervous. Eventually Liberty realized that I am MUCH smaller than her and decided to be more gentle with me. We played a lot. She took my rope toy and played "Keep Away" with me. My other cousin, Chance, didnt really like me. He growled at me and didnt really want to play with me. Thats ok though. I think he will like me when I get a little bit bigger. Maybe its because I am small right now. My mom tried really hard to get pictures of me and Liberty playing, but we ran around so fast and were always on the move that it was hard for her to get a decent one of us. Hey.... we were having fun, there was no time to stop and pose.
Me and Liberty:

I had a lot of fun. The weekend was over really quick it seemed and we headed back home. I hope to see my cousins (and my human relatives) again soon.

*wags tail*

What I learned today... The Dog Property Laws

1. I can make the small steps that lead outside just fine, but my little legs still have problems with the long stairs. By the time I get two steps from the top, I have to slow down because I am struggling - then the landing is wood so its slippery. Grrrr. Even worse trying to go down though. I sort of do this slide on my belly thing, using my front paws to take me down the next step. Sometimes my back paws are two steps behind my front paws though and so I kinda just slide down like a sleigh on a snowy hill. My mom tells me I need to take it slower and I will learn. I just think they need to install an escalator for me.

Upstairs is fun though so I dont mind the struggle to get up there. In the morning when mom goes upstairs to do some web surfing and emailing, I follow her up and lay down on the floor by her desk. The floor is wood and I would slide, so mom put down an old towel for me to lay on. It's my quiet time with mom... we both enjoy it.

This was me this morning:

My feline sisters (Maya, Sara & Pixie) like to hang out upstairs too. They sit in the window and sun bathe most of the day. Occassionally I try to play with them, but for the most part, they dont want too much to do with me...especially Sara and Pixie. Maya is the most tolerant of the bunch. Mom is trying to teach me that they arent my toys and that I shouldnt treat them as such. She said its important for me to learn this now because of my natural prey drive. I think I will remember it - so far I havent spit up and cat hair balls. *looks innocent with puppy dog eyes* A few days ago I followed mom upstairs and laid down by her desk and Maya came over and laid down by me. I think she approves of me. She's kinda fat (dont tell her I told you that though) and she pushed me and took up most of my blankie. She even rolled on her back trying to get me to rub her belly. Well, I am not her personal belly rubber, so I ignored her and went back to sleep. It was nice to have the company though... made me think of all the times I cuddled up with my brothers and sisters before we all went to our new homes.

Well, I think I am going to go now... I want to try and investigate the closet. I know they keep my food in there and if only I could find a way to get in there when they arent looking.
See ya later!!

Me and Maya:

My step sister, Haley, and I like to play. We have a good time together... she really wears me out. After I play with her, I sleep and sleep.
Haley is two years old, she has a lot of things to teach me, but right now I am more interested in playing tug o war with our rope toys, chewing on her tail, pulling her ears and stuff. Here is a picture of her and I playing the other day. She is very gentle with me because she knows I am much smaller than her. Someday though, I will be bigger than she is.

Off To Work I Go

I think I am the luckiest pup in the world! Today I got to go to work with my mom.
That's right... she packed up all my favorite toys, my blankie, some snacks, lunch & my doggie bowls and we went to the office.

My mom works in an office that used to be a big giant house - it was really neat. My mom put my blankie by her chair and I played and slept most of the day. Work sure is tough!! I also got to meet the office cat, Angelina. She didnt like me. I dont know why. I wanted to play with her but she just puffed her big black tail up and ran away. Oh well. At least I got to meet the people my mom works with and they all loved me... of course.

My mom told me on our drive to work that I should be on my best behaviour and I was. Everyone was amazed at what a good little girl I am. I also wagged my little stubby tail a lot - they loved it. I think I made a good impression and I might even be able to go back and visit them again sometime.

*curls up on my blankie and rests after a long day at work*

*yawns and stretches*

I've been home with my new family for almost a week now. I came to live with them on January 27th, 2006. I was born on December 12, 2005, one of nine babies born to Faithful Grace and Maxwell VI from Pennsylvania. I loved playing with my two sisters and 6 brothers and I do miss them, but I have a nice new family now and my sisters, mom and dad are all very nice. They take very good care of me. Actually, my mom is quite the pushover. All I have to do is look at her with my pretty eyes and turn my head slightly with my ears all perked and she just melts.

So far I have been trying to be a good girl though. When mom or dad takes me outside, I get straight to business and do my thing. I have only had two accidents in the house so far... which isnt bad for a youngin' like me. I'm only 7 weeks old, ya know!

My favorite toy is my rope. It's all different colors with a big knot on each end. I like to toss it around in the air and chew on it. It doesnt taste so yummy though so I dont eat it. I have a bunch of fun toys - it looks like Toys R Pups in my house.

*yawns and thinks about going back to sleep*

Well, thats all for now. I will update this soon - so check back often.
